Presently, I a student at old dominion university, for the RN to BSN program for my Bachelor of Science in nursing.
I earned my nursing education from ECPI university Virginia Beach campus, graduated in July 2020 and sat for my NCLEX in September 2020. I earned my nurse aide training at Abbott training center in Virginia Beach, sat for in my license exam November 2011.
Licensure
I hold a current and valid registered nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Before becoming a registered nurse in 2020, I held a nurse aide certificate in the commonwealth of Virginia.
Learning
Nursing involves continuous education, training, and certification. I have been participating in different competency classes such as insulin drips, cardiovascular medication drips, PCA pump usage, diabetes education, wound care, infection control measures, safety, basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support to mention a few.
Experience
As a registered nurse, I have had the opportunity to work in the hospital on a medical surgical unit and or a pulmonary step-down unit, with float rotations to the cardiac step-down unit. In my three plus years as a registered nurse, I have worked in three different organizations, and one being in a long-term acute care (LTAC) facility for ventilators and tracheostomy/collar dependent patients.
During my years as a certified nurse aide, it was my intent to work in multiple settings to understand the difference that exists between each patient care setting. As a result, I have experience in the nursing home setting, assisted living, group home, home health and the hospital setting.
Skills
My experience in the healthcare field has led to my exposure to multiple skills in nursing care. I have grown great skill in many areas of clinical skills that are required to carry out successful patient care. My skills cover but not limited to the following areas:
1). Peripheral intravenous line insertion.
2). Wound care/dressing and wound vacuum dressing application.
3). Airway maintenance for vent and trach patients.
4). Assessing and monitoring patient’s condition and intervening accordingly.
4). Patient activities of daily living, to mention a few.
I always received complements in my ability to handle patient’s and family situation when others tend to avoid such patients. This had led to my ability to have a good rapport with patients. Haven worked in an LTAC facility with vent and trach patient, I have become skilled in handling respiratory issue such as suctioning patient, ensure a patent airway, identifying when a ventilator dependent or trach collar patient needs deep inline or regular oral suctioning. My skill in managing patients on enteral feeding has been nothing but exceptional. During my time at the LTAC, I was considered the go to nurse to unclog clogged peg tube, g-tube or nasogastric tube. I am still learning, developing, and growing my nursing clinical skills.
Volunteer Work
I have volunteered twice only. I volunteered at the assisted living where I worked when I was in my associate program. It is my intention to volunteer at that facility in the future.
